This doesn’t prove that animals have feelings, and I’ll show you why. Here’s your argument:
1) A and B are animals
2) A and B are behaving in a way similar to humans
3) Conclusion: A and B, who are animals, have feelings.
The problem arises in premise 2). It is only your perception that the dog and cat are behaving like humans. There is no way to tell if they actually are, to ask them if this is what they’re doing, or to look into their brains. It’s not a proof that they have feelings like humans.
Of course we know that animals respond to stimuli from their environment through their nervous system. But do animals attach normative meaning to this stimuli, like humans do? Do they say, for instance, it’s cold and then say I’m unhappy because it’s cold?
I have heard that there are studies that have looked into the behavior of dogs in particular. That they express happiness, sadness, grief, depression, etc. I’ve also read, I believe in the NYT, that elephants remember their dead loved ones and come back to the spot they died to, in a way, to mourn. It’s not that I’m saying animals do not have feelings, I wanted to remark on Christian Dior’s comment.
Think about this. Do fish have feelings? Or Do frogs? Where do we draw the line? My point is, do we believe only those creatures who exhibit human like ways of acting have feelings? Or is it because they exhibit human ways of acting that they have feelings?

What is really cute is how everyone here is only interested in posting their own comments and not in reading what other people say! You have a comment that the puppy looks like it is starving, by someone saying ooooh it’s sooo cuuute (puke)! Looking at the picture rationally, the cat does not look as though it is necessarily cold or underfed. It may be, but there is no evidence of that in the picture. The puppy looks distressed. The position of its tail and its whole body language indicate some kind of distress – it may be cold, hungry or lonely (it has no collar, I don’t know if that is significant). It may be undernourished, but puppies tend to look thin as they start growing, so there is no evidence of that either.
The dog has approached the cat without being rejected (and no, cats do not always accept puppies approaching them, they often use their claws) , so they may come from the same household – they may be right outside their own front door for all we now. The dog appears to get some comfort by snuggling close to the cat, and the cat seems OK with it as well (its eyes are shutting in the last frame.
Now that is all I could deduce from looking at the pictures, you guys are probably a lot cleverer than me, but I suspect you are all just tinting your interpretations with your own prejudices, which is OK by me, but it does seem a bit silly. Oh, and that applies to the “they are starving and cold” group as well!

Katherine on July 18, 2009
I’ve grown up around animals my entire life. My dad was a canine officer. These animals are not starving. The dog’s skin looks loose because of its breed. Also, it’s a puppy and is still growing. If the puppy was malnourished, the ribs would be more visible and the skin tighter. The cat is actually fat like many happy cats are. The animals seem to be perfectly healthy and not mistreated in any way. The cat seems to be a bit perturbed, but that’s the worst thing happening in these photos. And yeah- it is a pretty sweet scene.

It was THEIR cat and THEIR dog. And just cause a dog has loose skin doesn’t mean it doesn’t eat. You can tell the cat isn’t missing meals. Just see the art for what it is and if you can’t see it, click the next button. Jeez. Douches. I can’t believe I actually wasted the time it took to give you a lesson in being human.

alright, I know that none of you will come back and see this after looking at the dates of your comments, but still…
To all you people complaining how the puppy looks so under nourished and that it is so very very cold need to do us all a favor and not reproduce.
I do not see at all where that dog looks like it’s starving to death, I have seen plenty of animals that are, and that is not one of them. I have owned 2 dogs that are skinnier than I would personally like because they just don’t eat much, don’t know why, they just don’t. I always leave plenty of food out for them and have changed foods several times to see if it’s just a taste preference, and no change in eating habits. An fyi, animals aren’t supposed to be fat, they are supposed to eat to survive, not because they see something that might taste good like us humans and like the pets that many of us have turned these once wild animals into. Also, you can’t tell how cold it is there at that time at all. Someone supposedly stopped and took the time to take pictures of this supposedly random occurrence, so it obviously is not life threatening temperatures. Cats sit like that often enough, and that could just as easily be a the position of a somewhat nervous puppy (note the puppy being nervous is the weakest part of this comment). Puppies like to cuddle whether it’s cold or not, however I will begrudge you that it is more than likely a little chilly at the time. Now back to where I said “supposedly random” how would a person know to stop and take pictures of what was happening if they were to walk up at even the second frame? The person obviously knew the two animals and knew that they had a habit of such acts otherwise would have no reason to believe that such a thing would happen.
Before you go looking for the bad in everything/everyone approach it like you may have been educated at some point and with an attitude that maybe, just maybe, the world isn’t your own personal never ending nightmare.

More power to Carson. I am a sucker for animal’s, I would give the shirt off my back for an animal, however these two seem fine! Why would anybody take these photo’s for anything than what they are CUTE AS ALL GET OUT! Also one of you (Brittany on october 27, 2007) wants to preach about the aspca, I work for a animal rescue service and I would pet that puppy on the head and give you a warning for wasting my time!
